Task 3 - choices choices.......

Idea 1 - Monster Fun Fact Book for Children/Young Teenagers (6-13)

During the summer I created a series of images that were based on Favourite  on mythological creatures. After posting a few online they were received very well by other people, and I decided that as a final idea I could create a fun fact book for children on Monsters. After researching Moshi Monsters, I've realised that at the moment monsters and other peculiar creatures are quite popular with young kids, and I feel that with my "weird" and "whacky" style of work and characters I feel this is the strongest idea that I have come up with, and the idea that can go along way.
Along with the book I was thinking of creating maybe some extra bits and pieces to go with the book, extra bits such as badges, bookmarks etc, just so I can showcase that theres more to this idea then just a book.

Idea 2 -  Macmillan Prize

I was thinking of entering the Macmillan Prize. I entered this competition last year, but didn't feel that my entry was that strong, and now with some better experience at page layouts and a better understanding on what kids want or like in a book story, I think entering this again would be a good idea, esp this time I'll get feedback from tutors and other students alike.
Entering this competition would also give me some worth while experience in creating a book towards a specific brief, bleed, layout commission etc.

Idea 3 - Continuation of Horde Of Hamsters Project

Another idea is to continue on with the "Horde Of Hamsters" project that I did during the first term of this year, after creating the characters and receiving feedback from the presentation I know which direction I can go now to improve the characters. The potential for the progression of this project is to create a story book for children aged around 8-12 . I feel that there's quite enough strength there in the characters to create a story. As you can see with the majority of these idea's, creating a book will be high on my agenda as its the area I can see my work being used in and its an area I feel quite passionate about, and it's where a lot of my inspiration comes from.

Idea 4 - Pylon Press Monster Booklet

Another idea I had which is basically the same as the monster book but instead of creating a fun fact book, I was thinking more along the lines of creating a Pylon Press booklet, that was solely a book with pictures in of the monsters.
This could be used as a combination with the coloured in version of the actual book. Like an add-on which will feature more characters, or show-casing the characters in their environment.

Idea 5 - Cheltenham Illustrations Awards

"Your entry to this year's Cheltenham Illustration Awards should be a personal visual response initiated by this arguably the best-known, best-loved and first Modernist piece of British classical music. Holst imbued each planet with characteristics which were representative of the human life cycle, from youth to old age, beginning with Mars, energetic and bombastic, ending with esoteric Neptune, alone, facing the mystical unknown.
We wish you to also apply the theme of 'Memory' (the theme to the Times Cheltenham Literature Festival 2013) to your response and avoid the obvious interpretations of Roman Gods, astrology etc.  Instead, as this is a competition focusing on narrative illustration, your entry may be drawn from your own memory, experience or your own invented fictional response."

Entering this competition would be a good experience to enter a renowned competition such as the Cheltenham awards. Also entering this competition would  put me out of my comfort zone which I have done a few times over the year entering various competitions, leaving my comfort zone is something that I think is quite essential especially when you need to change your style to fit into the ever changing art fashion.

Idea 6 - T-Shirt design - Creature Menagerie
T-shirt printing has been an interest thats always intrigued me, especially now I know how the whole process works and what you have to do to create a T-shirt print. The idea behind the T-shirt designs would be to create a series of humorous pictures and scenes of crazy animals, (As you can see this idea is inspired by the Weird Fish t-shirt designs, mainly thanks to its humorous imagery and character expression.)
T-shirt printing now is a big market, esp in this day and age, there are a lot of independent t-shirt print designers now, and there is a massive market now for this design media. The advantage of T-shirt prints as well is "Advertising." People walking around with your design on them is advertising your work to other people, which is a bonus on itself.

I wish I'd done that - artist 6

- Artist:
Tony Diterlizzi

- Project: The Spiderwick Chronicles
- Client: Simon & Schuster
- Genre: Children Illustration, Fantasy.

- Would you love to work with this client?
Having looked at their website, I can't really see any love for much illustrations for the books that their selling, but on the children section they are quite fond of the children adventure books. So I wouldn't mind working for this client if it was soley for a children's story as you'll do more work, and probably get more money from doing so.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?

Yes, inside the books are numerous black and white sketch's of the many scenarios going on in the book, inc the numerous creatures that are featured in the story such as trolls, brownies, faeries, which are illustrated greatly.

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?
Yes. The two genre's that have been specified here are the two category that I want to go into when I finish education, and its two genres that have inspired me, esp the fantasy side of it all.

- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?

yes, Tony's targeted audience was aimed at the young teenager audience around the 13 yr old bracket, and those that are fans of the fantasy genre.

- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?
Not seduced no, but the characters are eye catching and quite pleasing to the eye of a fantasy/mythological creature fan.

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?

The work is sort of in and out of my comfort zone: The quality of the work is well out of my league but creating B&W sketches is something I've been doing quite a long time now. The lay out of the pages as well are easily do-able (the work is usually either centered of the page, or it has one character lurking around the text)

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?
Not really.

- Artist: Mike Robinson

- Project: Cod-Roe-Phenia, The Prawn Identity T-shirt designs
- Client: Weird Fish
- Genre: cartoon, editorial, prints

- Would you love to work with this client?
Yes, its a pretty big T-shirt design company, and the editorial pieces used on the shirts are brilliant, especially the fish related puns such as Cod-Roe-Phenia, Prawn Of The Dead and Lock Stock and Two Smoked Mackerel.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?

Not really no, I love the T-shirt designs but not to the point where I  find them inspiring, I find the characters expressions great but I haven't used the designs as a source of referencing towards my own characters.

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?

I have an interest in some day having one of my designs printed onto a t-shirt, and hopefully submitting a design to a well established clothing make, companies like weird fish. I would love to work with Weird Fish, but I feel my work wouldn't fit into the style and genre that the company has become renowned for.

- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?

Well there is no targeted audience as such, but looking around the audience seem to be young adults - middle aged adults, so no I don't want my work to be received by the same audience as I feel my work wouldn't really suit this age group.

- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?

Like with the other artists I've chosen the characters are the main concentration in these pieces. The cartoon style of the fish and the very humorous message going on in the pictures are great and are what make the weird fish t-shirts so iconic, out-standing, and different to any other competition out there.

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?

Creating the characters are well within my comfort zone, but t-shirt printing is outside of my comfort zone as its something I've never really gone into or ever really had any idea of venturing into. I would be very interested in venturing into this area in the future, but at this current time and date its something I wouldn't consider that area to be a very comfortable area.

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?

The T-shirt designs are unusual in the sense that you can make any film title become a badly intended fish pun, and its surprising how well you can characterize any member of the fish family to resemble a film icon.

- Artist: Mind Candy

- Project: Moshi Monsters
 - Client: Made By themselves, but would say the target audience was for kids aged 8-12.
- Genre: Digital artwork, black colours, character designing

- Would you love to work with this client?
Seeing as this entry doesn't have a specific client because the game/characters were created by the company, I would say that the closest example of a client I can think of is the audience its targeting which would be for children, the age bracket of 8-12. Which is where I think my work would be accepted and is mroe suitable for.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?

I am inspired by the idea of Moshi Monsters, and how its become a huge world wide phenomenon with around 60 million odd users. After listening to an interview of the head of mind candy, the company was going down, and Moshi Monsters was the last idea that they had to save the company and now this simple, last ditch idea, saved the company, expanded Mind Candy to become a bigger game design studio, and of course create an iconic game/genre.

thats what I'm interested in, even being part of something like this would be great, just designing one of the many characters in that game would be rewarding in itself and something great to add to your portfolio.

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?

Yes, as a lot of my work is done via photoshop and I quite enjoy character designing and creating weird creatures.
- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?

Yes, as its the area of illustration I'm aiming as my target audience.
- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?

The style and colours used to create these characters are very eye catching and pleasing to the eye, the cutesy technique used in these characters work very well with the colour options that have been used, the colours are bright and bubbly something that the creatures are expressing very well, so theres a clear connection in those parts.

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?

The work is well within my comfort zone, the style of the drawings that have been used for the characters, are very simple, whacky, cutesy and colourful, exactly what kids want and love in a cartoon series or an online game.

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?

Not really no, the styles and techniques used in creating the characters are simple and very similar imagery that is commonly used now.

I Wish I'd Done That - Artist 3

- Artist: Paul Kidby
- Project: The Last Hero (2001)
- Client: Victor Gollancz Ltd
- Genre: Speculative fictionFantasy,FictionScience Fiction

Paul Kidby has been a massive influence and inspiration for me while I was growing up (in fact he's the reason why I ended up drawing so many dragons and delving more into the sic-fi/ fantasy world). Last year I sent Paul an email, and didn't really receive any answers to the questions I asked him, so I sent him another email (more professionally done and with more professional questions) and he answered back with better answers, which I was thankful for.

- What advice do you give to aspiring illustrators?
Keep practising! Draw every day, don't give up and remember that to produce anything really worthwhile takes a long time.

- How do I go about getting work as an illustrator?
I really don't think there is a cut and dried answer to this question (which I do get asked a lot). The best advice I can offer is to ensure you have a comprehensive portfolio of your strongest images. Try every avenue you can think of within the field and don't lose your motivation or inspiration even when the going gets tough (the first time I approached Terry Pratchett with my artwork I was unsuccessful, so I tried again four months later and we began working together). An up to date copy of the Writers and Artists Yearbook is very useful too.

Where do you get your ideas?
I was always blessed with an over-active imagination, not great when you are four and you are convinced there are dinosaurs in the hall in the middle of the night!
The natural world is a constant source of inspiration for me, I try to go for a walk every day in the countryside.
I enjoy watching films to see how other people have realised characters and environments and I read lots of reference books on all sorts of things.

- Would you love to work with this client?
Yes, as its main publishings tend to be based on Sci-Fi/ fantasy based, which is the area I tend to work in.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?
As stated before my work is influenced very much by Pauls work, the expressions he uses and the humour those expressions portray grip the reader and make the reader laugh or symphasize with the character.

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?
I have yes, its quite an inspirational genre to me, and a massive section in the art world now (especially thanks to the development and introduction of technology in the art world).

- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?
Yes, the audience that receive this piece of work are those who are fans of the weird and wonderful....and the slightly odd wonders of the disc world (the book series that Terry Pratchett is renowned for), after showing my work to people and my tutors everyone has remarked upon how weird and whacky my creations are.

- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?
The style of the work is very easy to the eye and the humour expressed in the pieces are very pleasing to the viewer.

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?
Outside of my area. His work is very detailed and the acrylic paints he uses for his work is a material that I don't use so I couldn't achieve the effect of the clean, smooth texture that he portrays in his work, as I'm more digital based.

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?
No, the work isn't surprising at all, as it does the job and it illustrates what the story is trying to show.

I wish I'd done that - Artist 2

- Artist/Illustrator/Design Studio: Chris Riddell
- Project: "The Edge Chronicles", Published 1998-2010
- Client: DoubleDay
- Genre: Pen, ink, sketch', line art, character designs

- Would you love to work with this client?
Yes, I would love to work with Chris Ridell, he is a renowned illustrator who's worked on a wide variety of books, and has won numerous awards for his work, to work with him would give me experience and great knowledge in the illustration world.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?
Inspired mainly by the use of how black and white images can work so much better then using colour, also the expressions that these characters display in the illustrations are brilliant as they look very life like and you don't have to read the page to understand what the character is trying to say and express.

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?
Yes, its an are where I work heavily in and where a lot of my drawings come into life, and its the way I create a lot of characters is very heavily influenced by black ink pen sketches.

- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?
Yes, the children - Young adult section is an area that I am aiming to get into when I get into the publishing world.

- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?
The style of the drawings are certainly eye catching and do the characters some justice.

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?
Chris Ridell's style and work is well within my comfort zone, especially the characters and pen usage in these drawings

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?
The work in this story is very unusual and weird, especially the variety of creatures that are used and portrayed in this story.
