I Wish I'd done that - Artist 1

Artist : Hayao Miyazaki/ Studio Ghibli
Project: Spirited Away (July 20th, 2001)/ My Neighbour Totoro (April 16th 1988)
Ni No Kuni (Feb 1st 2012)
Client:  Studio Ghibli
Genre: Anime/Cartoon/ Digital Art

- Would you love to work with this client?
I would love to work with Hayao Miyazaki or just studio Ghibli in general, as they’re a massive influence in the anime world, and have a massive following now, especially with the younger generation.

- Are you inspired by the ideas and concepts in the work?

- Have you got a special interest in this genre?
I do, this area of genre has been very influential to me while I was growing, and it still is. Although my style of drawing doesn’t match up to the anime scene, but when I was beginning to understand art and drawing my style used to be heavily influenced by this scene. To this day I’m still influenced by the work this studio produces, as I use a lot of their whackyness and ideas to create new characters and ideas in my work.

- Do you want your work to be received by a similar audience?
Yes.  My work and style in my eyes is mainly aimed and would be accepted by the younger audience, the difference would be mainly is I'm aiming at the younger audience whereas the anime films and scene aim to be accepted by people of all ages.

- Are you seduced by the style/aesthetics of the work?
Yes. The soft round edged to the characters and the expressions of the characters are brilliant, also the use of landscape and colour used in their films are truly amazing,

- Is the work well and truly within or outside your comfort zone?
Somewhere in-between. The character designing side of it all are well within my comfort zone, but the use of landscape and colour is not within my comfort zone, landscape is one area of my work that I struggle in.

- Is the work surprising or unusual in any way?
The work generally used by studio Ghibli are weird, especially the concept of the work and what plot they use in the stories (in spirited away the parents are turned into pigs, and a young male character is turned into a dragon). The characters as well are very weird and unusual and I believe that studio Ghibli get away with using these weird characters because of the way the characters interact with the film, environment and the general mood of the film scene (e.g. There’s a giant cat that’s really a bus).
